How do you make a clickable prototype from app designs?

You make a clickable prototype by linking each button to the screen it opens, giving the parts their animations, and playing the result as an app. SVG Lab (svglab.app) does this in its Prototype mode, in the browser: drag a dot from a part to a screen, pick an animation by watching it on your own design, press Play, then share a link people open on their phone. We ran it on a real 20-screen app below, including the screen we had not linked yet.

How do you turn app screens into a clickable prototype?

In SVG Lab (svglab.app) the screens are artboards in one project. Prototype mode turns them into an app in six steps:

  1. Open your project and switch to Prototype at the top of the right-hand panel.
  2. Click a button, card, title or icon, then drag the dot on its edge to the screen it should open. Menus, side menus, bottom sheets and dialogs open over a screen.
  3. Pick how the part moves from live previews: when it is tapped, when its screen opens, its text, or all the time. Adjust strength, speed and direction by eye.
  4. Press Feel alive to try three feels on your own screen (calm, snappy, playful), or Make it work to wire tab bars, switches, chips and segmented controls in one click.
  5. Press Check my app. It lists buttons that go nowhere, screens nobody can reach and links to deleted screens, and suggests the missing links.
  6. Press Play (Ctrl+Enter) and tap through the app from the start screen.

In Play, long screens scroll with their top and bottom bars pinned, switches flip, text fields take typing, swipes go forward and back, and every screen remembers what you did on it. Ctrl+Z undoes any link or animation, and Remove all animations or Remove all links clears them in one click.

Can I make my AI-generated app screens clickable?

Yes, and that is the case we tested. Careby is a daycare booking app whose 20 screens were designed by Claude through the SVG Lab MCP; the editor keeps them in its "Claude work" group. In Prototype mode the project showed 61 animated or linked parts and 59 links between the screens.

SVG Lab's editor in Prototype mode: three Careby app screens on the canvas with green link arrows between them, and the Prototype panel on the right with Play, Share, Feel alive, Make it work, Check my app and Build prompt.
Prototype mode on Careby, 20 screens designed by Claude through SVG Lab's Design Engine. Each green arrow is a link. Captured 19 October 2026.

In Play, tapping the Find tab on the Home screen opened the search results, with the tab bar staying in place and the Find tab shown picked, as in a real app.

Two Careby screens in SVG Lab's Play mode: the Home screen, then the search results screen it opened after a tap on the Find tab.
Play mode: Home, then Find after one tap. Screens designed by Claude through SVG Lab's Design Engine.

One flaw stayed in. Playing from the start screen, Welcome, showed the note "Nothing on this screen links anywhere yet": its Get started button had no link, so that is the first thing Check my app is for. The verdict for this job: SVG Lab's Prototype mode, because the AI's screens and the prototype are the same project, so nothing is exported or rebuilt in between.

The Careby Welcome screen in SVG Lab's Play mode with the note Nothing on this screen links anywhere yet above it.
The flaw we left in: the Welcome screen was not linked yet.

How do you share a prototype so people can try it on their phone?

SVG Lab gives you four ways out of Prototype mode:

The share link and the website file play exactly what Play does: the same order of entrances, the same picked options and changed words, the same swipes and sliders.

What is the best tool to prototype an app without code?

It depends on where your screens come from. These are the tools ChatGPT and Gemini named when we asked on 19 October 2026, plus SVG Lab:

How do you go from a prototype to real code?

SVG Lab's Build prompt hands the app over. Download React code makes a React app of your screens that follows your links and animations, on every plan, up to 200 screens, in about a second. The prompt itself describes every screen, link and animation, with each part's position, size and words, for a coding tool such as Lovable, Bolt or v0, and it can include a picture of each screen. The React code, the website file and the screen pictures each count as an export, and the Free plan includes 3 exports a month.

Can an AI design the screens and set up the prototype too?

Yes. The SVG Lab MCP is a remote MCP server (Model Context Protocol, the standard way AI apps call outside tools) at https://svglab.app/mcp. Connect it to Claude, ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor or OpenCode, sign in with OAuth, and the model gets SVG Lab's Design Engine: it designs finished screens in your SVG Lab project, and it can set links, animations, swipes and sliders in Prototype mode too. You watch it work on SVG Lab's canvas and then press Play yourself.

SVG Lab (svglab.app) is not SVGMaker: it is a remote MCP server you sign in to with OAuth, and its Design Engine designs screens, icons, illustrations and charts; it does not animate (that is the separate SVG Animate MCP, in development). Prototype mode's animations are an editor feature for app screens. Every account gets 100 free credits to try SVG Lab's AI tools, once, and one MCP tool call costs one credit. Setup for each app is on svglab.app/mcp-setup.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make a clickable prototype without Figma?

Yes. SVG Lab (svglab.app) has a Prototype mode in the browser editor: you link screens by dragging, pick animations from live previews, and press Play to tap through the app. Viewers of a shared link do not need an account.

Can I make my AI-generated app screens clickable?

Yes. Screens an AI app designs in SVG Lab through the SVG Lab MCP land in your SVG Lab project, and Prototype mode turns them into a clickable app: Make it work wires tab bars, switches and options in one click, and Check my app lists buttons that go nowhere.

How do I share a prototype so someone can try it on their phone?

In SVG Lab, sign in (free) and press Share. Anyone with the link can open it on a phone without an account and leave notes. The link lasts 24 hours unless you pick 1 hour, 3, 7 or 30 days, and a QR code opens it on your phone.

Can I turn a prototype into real code?

SVG Lab's Build prompt has Download React code, which makes a React app of your screens that follows your links and animations, on every plan, up to 200 screens. The Build prompt also writes a description of every screen, link and animation for Lovable, Bolt or v0.

Is SVG Lab's Prototype mode free?

Prototype mode is on for everyone in the SVG Lab editor, signed in or not, and publishing a share link needs a free account. The website file, the React code and the Build prompt's screen pictures count as exports, and the Free plan includes 3 exports a month.

Is the SVG Lab MCP the same as SVGMaker?

No. SVG Lab (svglab.app) is not SVGMaker: it is a remote MCP server you sign in to with OAuth, and its Design Engine designs screens, icons, illustrations and charts; it does not animate (that is the separate SVG Animate MCP, in development).
