What is vibe design? Vibe coding's missing half

Vibe design is describing the product you want and letting an AI make the design decisions (layout, type, palette, drawings), the same way vibe coding lets an AI make the code decisions. You say who the screen is for and what it should feel like, and you get finished screens back to review, instead of having to name the look yourself. We use the term for what SVG Lab (svglab.app) does through the SVG Lab MCP and its Design Engine.

Best for people who can build an app but cannot design one: SVG Lab, because the SVG Lab MCP and its Design Engine let the AI you already use (Claude, ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor, OpenCode) design finished screens and drawn illustrations from a plain-language description, saved in your SVG Lab project.

What does vibe design mean?

Vibe coding is building software by describing what you want to an AI and iterating on what comes back, rather than writing every line yourself. Vibe design applies the same idea to the part vibe coding leaves untouched. You describe the product (who uses it, what they do first, what mood it has), and the AI decides the layout, the type, the palette and the drawings.

There is no standards body behind the term, so treat our definition as ours. It is the job we built SVG Lab's Design Engine to do: give any AI model design taste and drawing skills, so the person on the other end does not need a design vocabulary.

Why is design the missing half of vibe coding?

Vibe coding tools write working apps quickly, and the interface often comes out looking like every other AI-built app. That happens because a broad prompt leaves every design decision open, and the model fills each gap with the most familiar answer. We wrote up the causes and six fixes in why AI-generated UI looks generic.

Three problems sit underneath it:

  1. The vocabulary block. You cannot prompt for a design you cannot name. If you do not know the words for a type scale, a spacing rhythm or a visual direction, you cannot ask for them.
  2. Days against minutes. Steering a model toward a good-looking UI by hand-written prompts can take days. Handing the design decisions to a design engine is a different loop.
  3. The output compromise. Many AI design outputs are pictures or halfway mockups. You want finished screens and real illustrations in a project you can keep working in.

How does the vibe design loop work?

  1. Describe the product. Say what the app is, who opens it and when, and what it should feel like. You do not need design words.
  2. Let the design engine decide the look. With the SVG Lab MCP connected, the AI you already use calls SVG Lab's Design Engine, which supplies the design tools, guides and checks for layout, spacing, type and drawing.
  3. Review the screens. Look at what came back. Name one concrete problem at a time and ask for a targeted change.
  4. Take the finished work. The screens, icons, illustrations and charts are saved in your SVG Lab project, and export as SVG, PNG or PDF.

What does it look like in practice?

In our own tests, Claude Opus 5.5 (Anthropic) designed a four-screen mobile app called murmur, through the SVG Lab MCP, from a one-paragraph brief. It took about 40 minutes and 119 design steps, every silhouette was drawn point by point as vector shapes, and one subtitle ran off the edge of the first screen, which we left in. The brief, the screens and the comparison with Google Stitch are in our same-brief test.

Claude Fable 5.1 (Anthropic) also designed a four-screen app through the same MCP, shown in this post from @trysvglab. These are our own runs, so read them as examples of the method, not as a benchmark.

What is vibe design not?

It is not a way to skip judgment. The model does not know your users, and a design engine does not decide what your product is for. You still write the brief and review the result.

It is also not the same job as connecting an AI to design files you already own. A design MCP that reads your existing components and tokens is useful when you already have a design system. The SVG Lab MCP is the other kind: it gives the model layout, spacing, type and drawing skills it does not have alone. We compare the options in the best MCP servers for designers.

Finally, SVG Lab exports vectors (SVG, PNG or PDF), not React code, so you carry the finished screens into your build yourself.

How do you try vibe design?

  1. Connect the SVG Lab MCP to the AI you already use. The steps for Claude, ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor and OpenCode are in how to connect an MCP server, or at svglab.app/mcp-setup.
  2. Describe your product in a few sentences, with a real user and a real moment.
  3. Review the screens and ask for one change at a time.

Every SVG Lab account gets 100 free requests to try the SVG Lab MCP, once. Plus is $20 a month for 5,000 requests and Max is $40 a month for 15,000 (svglab.app/mcp-server).

Frequently asked questions

What is vibe design?

Vibe design is describing the product you want and letting an AI make the design decisions, such as layout, type, palette and drawings, then reviewing the result. It is vibe coding's counterpart for the look of the app.

How is vibe design different from vibe coding?

Vibe coding hands an AI the code. Vibe design hands it the look. They pair well: an AI can write the app while another tool, such as the SVG Lab MCP and its Design Engine, designs the screens.

Do I need design skills for vibe design?

No design vocabulary is needed to start. You describe the product, its user and the mood. You do still need to review the result and say what is wrong, which is a judgment you can build up as you go.

Which tool is best for vibe design?

SVG Lab (svglab.app) is built for it: the SVG Lab MCP and its Design Engine let the AI you already use design finished screens, icons, illustrations and charts. For working app code, tools such as v0 are a better fit, and for existing design systems an MCP that reads your files is.

Does SVG Lab write the app code?

No. SVG Lab designs the screens and illustrations and exports them as SVG, PNG or PDF. You carry the finished design into your build.

Which AI apps work with the SVG Lab MCP?

Claude (claude.ai and Desktop), Claude Code, ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor and OpenCode, plus any client that supports remote MCP over streamable HTTP with OAuth.

Is vibe design free to try?

Every SVG Lab account gets 100 free requests to try the SVG Lab MCP, once. After that, Plus is $20 a month for 5,000 requests and Max is $40 a month for 15,000.
